What Is a DIN-Rail PC?

A DIN-rail PC, also known as a DIN-rail industrial computer, is a compact and rugged computer specifically developed for industrial applications. It is mounted directly on a DIN rail to enable space-saving and secure integration in control cabinets. Thanks to its compact design and fanless cooling, a DIN-rail PC is ideal for automation technology, control systems and IoT applications. The term "DIN rail" refers to the standardised mounting rail used in industry for attaching electrical and electronic components. These rails are usually made of steel or aluminium and are available in the sizes 35×15 mm and 35×7.5 mm, in accordance with the DIN EN 50022 standard. A DIN-rail PC utilises this mounting system to ensure easy installation and secure hold, even in demanding environments subject to vibrations or temperature fluctuations.

DIN-Rail Mounting of DIN-Rail PCs

A DIN-rail PC is specifically designed to be mounted directly on DIN rails. This fastening method enables easy integration into existing systems and ensures a secure, space-saving installation. Many DIN-rail PCs are supplied with optional mounting hardware for straightforward attachment to the DIN rail.

The more compact and lightweight a DIN-rail PC is, the better it is suited for mounting on a DIN rail. A low tilting moment – as is the case with the POC-400 shown in the image – ensures stable fastening.

The manufacturer’s manual explains in detail how the device can be effortlessly snapped onto a DIN rail, see Figure 3.

As a rule, a DIN-rail PC can be mounted on both the deeper (15 mm) and the shallower (7.5 mm) variant of the DIN rail.

Example: The Neousys POC-400 as a DIN-Rail PC

An excellent example of a DIN-rail PC is the Neousys POC-400, which is equipped with a side-mounted DIN-rail clip. With its compact dimensions of 56.5×107.5×153.3 mm and a weight of just 960 grams, this model is ideal for mounting on a DIN rail. The low weight reduces the tilting moment and ensures stable fastening inside the control cabinet.

FAQ – DIN-Rail PCs for Industry

Here you will find answers to frequently asked questions about selecting and mounting DIN-rail PCs (DIN-rail IPCs). For individual advice, please use our enquiry form or the AI assistant.

What is a DIN-rail PC and where is it used?
A DIN-rail PC is a compact industrial computer that is mounted directly on a standardised mounting rail (DIN rail TS35) via a retention mechanism. It is primarily used in control cabinets for factory automation, building management systems or as an IoT gateway.
What are the advantages of DIN-rail mounting?
Mounting on a DIN rail enables quick, tool-free installation and clear placement directly alongside other components such as PLC controllers or terminal blocks. This saves space in the control cabinet and significantly simplifies wiring.
Are DIN-rail PCs fanless?
Yes, most DIN-rail models at OMTEC feature a fanless design. Heat dissipation is achieved through the rugged aluminium or metal housing. This makes them maintenance-free and resistant to dust, which is a decisive advantage in control cabinet environments.
What power supply do DIN-rail IPCs require?
Industrial DIN-rail PCs are typically designed for DC power operation, usually in the range of 12V to 24V DC or with wide-range inputs (e.g. 8V to 35V DC), allowing direct connection to the power supply unit in the control cabinet.
Do DIN-rail PCs have industrial interfaces such as COM or CAN?
Absolutely. Despite their compact form factor, they often offer serial interfaces (RS-232/422/485) for communicating with legacy machines, isolated digital I/Os (DI/DO) as well as CAN bus options for automotive or automation applications.
Can DIN-rail PCs also be used as edge gateways for AI?
Yes, there are special high-performance models (e.g. based on NVIDIA Jetson or with Intel Core CPUs) that provide sufficient computing power for AI inference and edge computing despite DIN-rail mounting. We are happy to advise you on selecting the appropriate performance class.
