HMI for Harsh Environments

HMI Panel PCs for harsh environments are designed as "embedded" Panel PCs for commercial and industrial settings. They must withstand the ingress of dust, dirt, and moisture. The enclosure design prevents the infiltration and accumulation of foreign substances in HMI Panel PCs.
The degree of resistance is classified by the DIN EN 60529 standard, "Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures," in IP protection ratings. IP stands for "Ingress Protection." Since this is an internationally recognized standard, IP is sometimes also interpreted as "International Protection."
IP Protection Ratings for HMI Panel PCs
HMI Panel PCs often meet the IP65 protection rating. The first digit of the protection rating represents protection against the ingress of foreign objects. The number 6 means "Complete protection against dust ingress (dust-tight)." In contrast, a 5 as the first digit would indicate that dust particles can enter the enclosure but cannot accumulate inside. The corresponding standard designation is "Protection against dust accumulation inside (dust-protected)." Thus, even for HMIs in harsh environments, protection levels are distinguished as "dust-protected" (limited protection) and "dust-tight" (maximum protection).
Another challenge for HMIs in harsh environments is moisture and splashing water. The second digit of the IP protection rating refers to protection against these factors. Specifically, the 5 in IP65 stands for "Protection against water jets (nozzle) from any direction." This means that not only "accidental spraying water" (e.g., protection rating IP64) but also intentionally directed water jets cannot penetrate the enclosure.
