The Intel Core 2 are 64 bit microprocessors of the 2nd Core generation. The mass market version with 2 processor cores are called Core 2 Duo. Due to drastically shortened pipeline technology and improved computing units, the Core 2 Duo provide up to 40% more performance at the same clock frequency. In addition, the power-saving function of the predecessors Pentium M and Intel Core has been integrated.

The Intel Core 2 Duo T5500 is an entry-level dual-core processor for notebooks. It is based on the Merom-2M core and is therefore still manufactured in 65nm. However, the virtualisation functions of the Merom core are deactivated in the T5500. Due to the low clock speed, the relatively small cache and the slow FSB, the performance of the T5500 is limited and even in 2008 it was only in the entry-level class. Compared to Pentium and Celeron models, however, the Core 2 Duo should offer more power-saving mechanisms.
